After the Great Cataclysm, some Kuma-Nui were forced to migrate to the island of Mata Nui. Upon arriving to the new island, Teridax enslaved most of them using Infected Kanohi. Teridax used them to terrorize the Matoran and delay their return to Metru Nui. They manly lived in the forests around Ta-Wahi, and the Ta-Matoran Guard had several patrols with the task of keeping the Kuma-Nui out of the villages.

During his quest for the Kanohi, Kopaka once found and fought a Kuma-Nui, and when Kopaka knocked the Rahi's Infected Kanohi, it fled.

After Makuta was defeated by the Toa Mata in his lair, and he released the Kuma-Nui and the other Rahi from his control.

Mata Nui's population of Kuma-Nui was forced to migrate back to Metru Nui after the Toa Nuva unleashed the Bohrok Swarms on the island. The Kuma-Nui succesfully arrived to the Matoran Universe, where they resided for some time.
